There are many things to consider if you’re looking for a career in Advertising and Marketing. The first thing to think about, is which industry you are more interested in. Many people are quick to categorise Marketing and Advertising under the same umbrella, when they can actually be very different. Because of this, it’s worth thinking about what your interests are and what skills you have before you speak to Recruiters in Marketing and start applying for jobs.
What type of roles are there in Advertising?
A popular graduate job in Advertising is being a media ‘planner’ or media ‘buyer’ which involves gathering data and analysis from different media platforms and identifying the best platform for an advert to gain optimum research. You may also be responsible for negotiating the best price, position and timing for your client. Most larger companies will have a separate employee for media planning and media buying but in graduate start-up jobs there might be one person fulfilling both roles.
Other types of roles in Advertising can include Account Management which is where you act as the vital point of contact between a business and its clients. For these entry level sales jobs you’ll need to have excellent time management and be able to keep on top of multiple jobs at the same time. You will also need a level of confidence to negotiate, sell to people and present – if you are a “people person” then you’ll be perfect!
What is the difference between Digital and Content Marketing?
Marketing has evolved a lot, with Digital Marketing taking place as one of the fastest growing industries globally. While physical campaigns still hold importance, the majority of Marketing takes place online. You could describe the Digital Marketing industry as the use of various channels, tools, technologies and campaigns to build brand awareness, engage with customers, and ultimately sell of product or service.
There are different aspects to entry level marketing jobs, which require different skills. For example, for SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) you might be spending a lot of time looking at Google Analytics and analysing graphs and statistics. Therefore, being logical and interest in exploring analytics will be a good skill to have. For example, if you have a background in Psychology or Geography where you have some transferable skills then you might be interested in a role in digital marketing.
On the other side there is Content, Social Media and Email Marketing which is focused more on creative writing and understanding a target audience. For this aspect of marketing you will be expected to have a high quality of written and verbal communication. You will also need to be adaptable in your written ‘tone’ to match the style and brand of whoever you are creating content for. If you studied a degree in English, Philosophy or History for example, that may involve a different written styles such as long essays or short posts.
So, now that you have a small introduction about the different roles in Marketing and Advertising, you’ll probably be wanting to know how to get a graduate job in Marketing and Advertising. Give A Grad A Go have an excellent range of CV Templates for Students and example Job Interview Questions.
